Mouth Tape, Oil Pulling & More: Do These Viral Dental Trends Actually Work?

By Broadmoor Family Dental

If you’ve spent more than 30 seconds on TikTok lately, you know the app has a way of turning wellness habits into full-blown movements. The dental space is no exception. From mouth taping at bedtime to oil pulling with coconut oil, social media has become a breeding ground for viral trends promising better oral health and brighter smiles. But the real question is: do they work? Let’s break down a few of the buzziest trends and talk about what actually belongs in your routine.

1. Mouth Taping:

This trend involves placing a small piece of tape (some brands make tape specifically for this practice!) over your lips while you sleep to encourage nasal breathing. Proponents say it can improve sleep quality, reduce snoring, and even support oral health by preventing dry mouth.

Does it work? In some cases, yes. Breathing through your nose helps maintain better oral moisture and lowers the risk of cavities and bad breath. But for mouth taping to be safe, it should never be done without checking for underlying issues like sleep apnea or nasal obstruction. Talk to your dentist or physician before making this a part of your nightly routine.

2. Oil Pulling:

This ancient practice involves swishing oil (usually coconut) around your mouth for 10–20 minutes to “pull” toxins and bacteria out of the mouth.

Does it work? Oil pulling may help reduce harmful bacteria and improve bad breath temporarily, but it’s not a substitute for brushing and flossing. If you enjoy the ritual and find it helpful, go for it. Just make sure it supplements your regular dental care rather than replacing it.

3. Tongue Scraping:

Not as new, but recently trending again thanks to wellness influencers, tongue scraping is the act of using a curved tool to clean the surface of the tongue and remove bacteria buildup.

Does it work? Absolutely. Tongue scraping can reduce bad breath and improve taste perception. It’s quick, easy, and a great addition to your morning routine. Just make sure you clean your scraper regularly and store it safely!

4. DIY Whitening Hack:

From activated charcoal to baking soda and lemon juice, the internet is full of DIY recipes that claim to whiten teeth at home.

Do they work? Some may give short-term results, but they often come at a cost. Abrasive ingredients can wear down enamel, leading to sensitivity and increased risk for decay. Your best bet? Talk to your dentist about safe, effective options.

5. Alkaline Water for Oral Health:

Some TikTok creators suggest drinking alkaline water to reduce acidity in the mouth and protect enamel.

Does it work? While staying hydrated is crucial, the benefits of alkaline water for oral health are still up for debate. There’s no harm in drinking it, but it won’t replace the need for brushing, flossing, or regular dental visits.

Social media has its perks when it comes to sharing health tips, but not everything that goes viral is backed by science. When in doubt, check in with your dentist before jumping on a trend.

When it comes to your oral health, stick to the basics, and don’t believe everything you scroll and see!
